The Ugly Duckling is basically comparing one of your moles that seems suspicious to the birthmarks or moles surrounding it. If it a different color shape size this might be something more than just a mole.
Since many of your birthmarks and moles resemble one another you can see that if you notice one that different you can get it checked out by a dermatologist
ABCDES
A: Asymmetry: Watch for when a mole isn't symmetrical; when its not circular or shaped like an oval.
B: Border: Watch for Mole that have jagged edges, even if it is symmetrical.
C: Color: Watch for if a mole as several different colors or if the colors are very different from most of you other moles or birthmarks.
D: Diameter: Watch for if the mole or birthmark is larger than a pencil eraser in diameter
E: Evolving: If a mole or birthmark changes in color, shape or size this is a key warning sign that it may be more than just a mole or birthmark
